Card games are one of the most common kinds of games that we play today. Whenever someone visits a casino, he/ she is likely to find a large variety of card games to choose from. Games such as poker, baccarat etc. all involve playing cards. These different kinds of card games broadly fall into some categories of games. These categories are made on the basis of the number of players involved in the game, and the skills and the time needed to play the game. All these games have their own respective set of rules, and each one of them is fun to play. The categories of the different kinds of card game are as follows:
1. Trick taking games – These are the games that involve a differing play structure, for instance euchre, bridge, whist, piquet, hearts, pinochle etc. All these games have a concept of trick behind them, and each player is supposed to put one card during each trick. Trick taking games again have subtypes, which include positive trick taking games, final trick games, and exact prediction trick taking games. Then there are other kinds of trick taking games too where the tricks can be taken by the players on some sort of a contract.
2. Card Exchange Games – These are one of the simplest kinds of card games and are really easy to learn and play, which is why they happen to be an instant hit among beginners. Examples of this are rummy and other card passing games, where the objective often is to collect a certain combination of cards, and whosoever gets it first wins the game.
3. Patience games – The player in patience games is supposed to move the cards on the basis of a certain specific set of rules. These games are usually single player games, and are often also considered to have a subcategory of competitive patience games.
4. Solitaire games – Solitaire games are by far the most popular kind of card games, and much of the credit goes to the free solitaire games that come with many computer operating systems. These include FreeCell, Ace of Pile, Concentration etc. The competitive games are the spite and the double solitaire.
5. Casino card games – Also known as gambling card games, these are found in the casino. While some come under the category of ‘beatable games’, others are unbeatable. The beatable games include Poker, Video poker games, Blackjack etc., while the unbeatable ones include 3 card poker, Keno, Roulette, Baccarat etc.
6. Shedding game – As the name suggests, the objective behind these games is to dispose all the cards as soon as possible. Uno, Crazy Eights and Speed are the classic examples of shedding card games. Other games under this category are Seven Spades, War and Snap.
7. Collectible Card Games – Popularly known as customizable card games, these games have a specially designed pack of cards. The cards have a certain set of rules, and the subset of the cards are available, which consists of the starter set, theme pack and starter deck.
There are also modern collectible card games, online card games, and some multi genre and fictional card games too.
