Donn Arden was the dance instructor credited with creating the Vegas showgirl image. The Las Vegas showgirl is long-legged dancer in shiny sequins, feathers and wearing sky-scraping headpiece. Arden’s dance group headlined the Desert Inn’s 1950 opening. He later developed the Lido de Paris show, which ran at the Stardust from 1958 to 1991. He studied dancing with Robert Alton, who later became a Broadway director. Donn Arden decided he was much better suited organizing and directing dance shows rather than actually performing in them, he decided he was not Fred Astaire. Arden got his first break in Ohio, where he staged shows in clubs operated by known racketeer Moe Dalitz. Arden said, but they shared his vision of female beauty and were willing to finance it.
The Desert Inn opened in 1950 with Wilbur Clark acting as front man for the Cleveland investors led by Moe Dalitz. The Desert Inn had Donn Arden’s dancers as part of the entertainment line up. In the late 1950s, when Moe Dalitz sent director Frank Sennes looking for something original to christen the Stardust hotel Arden had made his way to France and the original Lido de Paris. The Stardust hotel bought the rights to the show but gave Donn Arden all the creative freedom he needed to redesign the show for U.S. audiences
