It was in saloons that travellers could find other people to converse with, drink with, and frequently gamble with. In 1931, Nevada legalized gambling throughout the state thus Las Vegas, spawned America’s first legalized gambling local in casino history. Currently, Las Vegas has the largest concentration of casinos in the United States. Another significant year in casino history was 1978; New Jersey authorized gambling in Atlantic City, making it America’s second largest breeding ground for casino. Other locus for gambling and casinos in the U.S. are the Gulf Coast region around Biloxi, Tunica Resorts, and Mississippi.
Casino history tells us that gambling establishments is a huge income generator. It currently has become a multibillion dollar industry providing governments with increasing proportion of annual revenues. The trend toward having more casinos has made research on public health impacts of gambling more and more imperative to people and decision-makers. A study using random telephone survey of gambling activities was conducted with 2,682 adult population of metropolitan Windsor (Canada) prior to the Casino Windsor opening. The survey was repeated with 2,581 residents a year later. There were no statistically significant changes in the pathological gambling among the general populace one year following the casino opening.
