The dice game of craps is played based on the roll of a dice where people place bets predicting the result of the roll. Sometimes, more than one dice is used for the game. There are essentially two kinds of craps – street craps and Casino or bank craps. Street craps are usually played between two or more players whereas in Casino craps, each player plays against the bank. Due to the involvement of very little equipment, street craps are played often in informal gatherings.
The simplicity of craps makes it one of the most played dice games in most casinos. The rules are quite simple and straightforward. In casino craps, the table is covered with bets of all kinds; each of them having their respective odds. The players will place their bets and will take turns in rolling a pair of dices. The player who rolls the dice for the round is called the ‘shooter’. The first round of the game is called the ‘come out’ roll.
For a player to be eligible to shoot, he or she has to place a bet which is equal or greater than the minimum for the table. Alternatively, he or she can place a bet on the ‘Pass’ or ‘Don’t Pass’ line. The shooter is changed in an anti clockwise direction around the table. The next shooter in line has the choice to roll or pass on the dice cup to the next player.
The person organizing the game for the casino is called the ‘stickman’. He is responsible for taking bets, announcing results for the roll, decided when to close betting and call for the roll of the dice. The stickman is called so because he carries a long stick to collect the dice after the roll. Other staffs involved in the game are the boxman and two base dealers. The box man takes care of the chips, oversees the dealers and handles coloring out. The base dealers are responsible for collecting bets from the players and paying out the winners. Some casinos interchange the staff’s duties depending on the crowd.
Before the roll, the shooter is given a dice cup containing 5 dices. The player has to choose a pair of dices and throw them. The dealer might insist that the shooter use only one hand while handling the dice and that while throwing the dice they must bounce off the wall of the craps table. These requirements are necessary to keep the game fair. Also, the chances of interchanging the casino dice with a loaded dice decreases immensely.
If by chance, during the throw, the dice falls outside the table, the shooter has to select another die from the dice cup and throw it again. However, on request, the fallen die may be used by the player if it passes the inspection of the boxman. Again, this is done to prevent use of loaded dice in the game and to ensure fairness to all players.
